If your family is experiencing stress due to loss of a family member, divorce, issues with a teenager, a defiant child, or adjusting to a medical illness (e.g. cancer, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, traumatic accident, or deciding long term care for a parent or loved one) therapy can be helpful.
Family therapy can provide a safe environment for each member to have a voice and to have an opportunity to share with another family member their feelings, thoughts regarding their own experience of the situation.
Kay uses sandtray therapy by asking individual family members to build a sand tray around the difficulty they are experiencing, as well as have the family build a sandtray together. Sandtray therapy provides a distancing for family members that makes it emotionally safer to communicate in a non-verbal way by using miniatures and symbols. The therapist provides a holding space for each family member and the family. Kay reflects and processes the sandtrays with the family and it provides an opportunity for the families to connect and understand what each family member is experiencing around the issue (s) presented during the session.
