Healing trauma one sandtray at a time.
Kay Gottrich LCPC uses sandtray therapy with children, teens, families, and couples. All my clients, whether children or adults are all amazed how powerful sandtray therapy is.
We’ve known about sandtray therapy is a powerful therapy for years (since the 30’s) but we have only fairly recently learned WHY it is so powerful.
We can now peek inside the brain with fMRI’s (which evaluate how the brain functions) and understand how our brain processes information. Information is processed first with pictures and THEN words and linguistics is attached to it. This makes sense when you think about it – we can process images long before we can process words developmentally.
I bet if you think about it, it still happens. Ever seen a picture that affected you in a certain way in your mind and body, but you struggled to put it into words? That is because information is processed first with pictures and images in the right part of our brain and the information may never get moved into the left part of our brain (where words happen).
The right side of the brain is where all our early trauma lies as well as our feelings and emotions.
Seems like the right side of the brain is where the big meat of therapy stuff lies, doesn’t it?
AND – you get one other HUGE benefit when you show me your world in the sand, I can understand more about you and will then be able to help you get better faster. I know it may seem a little kooky or weird, but I promise sandtray therapy is grounded in science and an evidence-based treatment. When you come see me for therapy, we will be in the sandtray.
Here is my prediction- you will realize all kinds of things that you didn’t know were linked by doing a sandtray. You will discover awareness of things you are struggling worth and make connections that would take longer in talk therapy. Sandtray therapy helps your brain work together better and helps me as a therapist understand your world better so I can know how to help you get better faster.
Clients can communicate so much more in the sand tray than the clients would be able to tolerate by talking about it. The sand tray provides the hands to create in the tray what the brain cannot say. Talk therapy works with the left brain (logical/reasoning part of the brain) and sandtray therapy works with the right brain (emotional and creative side of the brain).
So what do you think, are you willing to give it a try?
